We arrived to the Groove Palace around 4pm. It was a 3.5 hr drive southwest from Portland to the central coastline. We pulled up to a chained metal bridge over a gorgeous babbling river. The palace was set up back on a hill guarded by dark greens.

After pulling up the driveway, a working farm appeared. Apples trees, apricots, blackberries, peaches, pears, cherries, fresh herbs: basil mint rosemary bay thyme basil sage parsley. The real deal, 96 Acres of pure country with pines and rolling hills with complete secrecy and warmth.

We were met with cold beers, 80’s sunglasses, and towels- and immediately found ourselves floating in the river and sunbathing. Clothes were optional for a few. We were offered sandwiches, sweets, and more cold beer. Fat Tire, Rogue (who sells White Truck Wine at their brewery) and some other local OR beers. After the late afternoon river bath, I decided it was time to capture the essence of this one of kind place on canvas. As I was painting, Brad was shooting film, and our hosts were working on the land.

Our hosts were spectacular people. The kind of people that understand the art of living and the art of entertaining. After my painting session I wanted to cook dinner for the 11 of us. Before leaving Portland I went to the Saturday Farmers Market in Portland and bought some fresh produce to cook at the farm.

MENU:

Tuna lime mint basil ceviche

Red beet, curly parsley, goat cheese with citrus accent

Yellow wax beans with fresh mint

Espresso and cumin crusted top sirloin with fresh rosemary and sage- mouvedre cherry reduction over organic baby arugala

Grilled ahi ahi tuna with a thyme citrus orange reduction

White Truck Sangria with champaign floater and fresh peaches

Mojitos with farm white mint

Instead of having a supermarket, I just walked outside the palace and grabbed all the fresh herbs I could get my hands on. The ingredients were so fresh and so very organic. I could not believe the lifestyle here. It was so amazing to see a place like this exists. If I had the option of staying at the palace for the rest of this trip I just might have. Brad agreed as well. We both are in awe to have experienced something as beautiful and special as the groove palace. I’m not sure if we can top this experience but we are sure as heck gonna try!

After dinner we sat down to a campfire with an acoustic guitar and violin outside under a clear night sky. The stars were spectacular last night and the world seemed to be perfect. It was a very tough place to have to say goodbye to, but I have the feeling I’ll be back.

Hi Mike,

I was urged to visit your blog by my Brother-in-law, Jeff Davis in Boston, Mass. Looks like your product tour has met with some great experiences and some interesting folks. Nothin’ like a bit of fermented fruit to get the natives to warm up to ya!

I have some family in Embudo, New Mexico. It is just South of Taos. Lots of stuff going on up there. Art festivals/tours, music, restaraunts etc… Hope you get out that way. I look forward to checking in on the blog often! Cheers!

A friendly hello from the “land of oz” glad to of met you 3 in Sioux Falls the other night, sorry we didnt finish up getting bombed w/ you guys and didnt officially get to say our goodbyes as we had to go feed the kids and didnt get back to partying with you at the bar. How bout them cowboys from Arizona ?? I may spend the rest of my life, or a day or two anyway. Wondering if they ever got their truck without a good ol’ fashioned shoot out.????HMMMM I may never know. I was getting buzzed enough to go help them, probably would of, if my wife and kids hadn’t got hold of me and got me outta there.
My wife says hello and we enjoyed meeting and visiting with you guys, not often we get to meet new and interesting people, and I normally don’t go out of my way to do so. I dont “stray from the pack” so to speak, fraid of get’n bit by strays, thugs and thiefs. You guys come across as good, decent people with a story to tell. Consider yourselves very lucky to be doing what your doing now and it appears you guys each have a gift to share with the world, your art. Not all of us are born with that talent, let alone having the balls to pursue it, though we are gifted thru other avenues. Me, my beautiful wife and 2 wonderful kids are my gifts I never take for granted. I wonder all the time what I ever did right in this world to be so fortunate to have what I have.
We invited you guys to stay with us if you ever pass thru this way and the offer still stands.Whether you 3 are together or alone give us an e-mail at dtduncan@wamego.net or call us at (785) 456-8316
Once again, glad to of met you and “peace be the journey” (remember that line from the movie “Cool Running”?) ( Jamaican bobsled ya know)
You guys be safe,
Dale and Teresa
